This Dutch apple crisp recipe is made without oats and is a slight twist on the traditional apple crisp. It’s perfect for people who love apple pie, but don’t want to deal with making a pie crust.
The recipe exclusively uses brown sugar in order to give it a rich taste that reminds me of a caramel apple.
Warm cinnamon apples are topped with a buttery apple-streusel topping that is crispy and sweet and perfect and I love it so much.

What You’ll Need to Make Dutch Apple Crisp
Ingredients for Dutch Apple Crisp
- Apples (I used Gala)
- Lemon Juice
- Vanilla
- Brown Sugar
- Ground Cinnamon
- All-Purpose Flour
- Kosher Salt
- Unsalted Butter
Special Equipment
You’ll need a 8×8 baking dish for this recipe. If you want to minimize cleanup, I recommend using one of those disposable aluminum pans you can find at the grocery story. This is also a great option if you’re making this for a friend!
A vegetable peeler is also a helpful tool when making this Dutch apple crips, since you’ll need to peel the apples – more on that later.
Suggested Apple types for Dutch Apple Crisp
There are so many types of apples out there and some lend themselves to making apple crisp better than others.
I used gala apples when I tested this recipe, but here’s a list of apples that are good for baking:
- Gala
- Braeburn
- Granny Smith
- Fuji
Any of the apples in that list would be great for this recipe!
Peel the Apples for the Perfect Texture
I tried to make this recipe without peeling the apples and it just wasn’t the same. Unfortunately, that is a shortcut we can’t take this time.
If you want the apples to become a saucy, soft texture, then you definitely want to peel them before coring and slicing.
The good news is, that peeling the apples is the only intensive part of this Dutch apple crisp recipe. Everything else comes together quickly and easily.

- Prep Time: 25 minutes
- Cook Time: 35 minutes
- Total Time: 1 hour
- Yield: 9 servings 1x
- Category: Dessert
- Method: Baking
Ingredients
Apple Base
4 rounded cups apples (gala recommended) – peeled, cored, and sliced *
1 Tablespoon lemon juice
1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
2 Tablespoons brown sugar – packed
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Streusel Topping
1 cup all-purpose flour – spooned and leveled, see note **
1/3 cup brown sugar – packed
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
4 Tablespoons unsalted butter – melted
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Make the Apple Base
- Peel, core, and slice your apples (4 rounded cups or roughly 6 apples – peeled, cored, and sliced) into medium slices, about a centimeter thick.
- Add the apples to an 8×8 baking dish.
- Top the apples with lemon juice (1 Tablespoon), vanilla extract (1 Tablespoon), brown sugar (2 Tablespoons – packed), and ground cinnamon (1/4 teaspoon).
- Gently stir to evenly coat the apples.
Make the Streusel Topping
- In a mixing bowl, add the all-purpose flour (1 cup – spooned and leveled, see note **), brown sugar (1/3 cup – packed), kosher salt (1/4 teaspoon), and ground cinnamon (1/8 teaspoon).
- Stir with a fork until combined and no white sections of flour are left.
- Pour the melted unsalted butter (4 Tablespoons) evenly over the top of the dry mixture.
- Combine everything in the bowl with a fork until you get a crumbly mixture with no clear wet patches.
- Evenly pour the streusel topping over the apples in your baking dish. Give the dish a gentle shake to even out the topping.
Bake for 35 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Allow to cool slightly before eating. Best enjoyed with a scoop of vanilla ice cream 🙂
Notes
* I used 6 medium apples
** To get the most accurate measurement of flour, you need to spoon the flour into the measuring cup and then use the flat spine of a knife or the handle of your spoon to level the cup. We do it this way because scooping the flour directly from the bag can result in a very dense cup of flour that uses more flour than the recipe calls for.
To help with your grocery shopping, I’ve put together a list of where each ingredient is generally located in the grocery store and the total amount you will need for the recipe (NOTE: the quantities of the ingredients below do not change if you update the scale of the recipe)

Can I make in advance and freeze?
Sierra says
Hi! I’ve never tried to make it in advance and freeze it, but I don’t see why not. It just might take longer to bake – it should be done once you have some bubbling around the edges. If you make it from frozen, let me know how it goes!

Why did my streusel topping fall flat? How do I fix this?
Sierra says
Hi Kim! If your streusel fell flat, it could be because the mixture was overworked and lost its crumbly texture.
